Gatherings

Since the actual cremation can take place before or after an event, there are many service and gathering options to choose from, both with or without the body present. (Keep in mind that cremation remains can also be buried, allowing for graveside gatherings.)

There are many options to choose from, both with or without the body present.

Visitation/viewings

Visitations are often held before a funeral service or ceremony in order to allow loved ones to gather, and the community to pay its respect to the family. If done before cremation, a casket can be present at the viewing. Otherwise, you may choose to have the urn present or simply display a portrait.

Funeral service with cremation following

Funeral services are usually held before the cremation at a church, funeral home chapel, or any other appropriate setting. In any case, funeral directors and clergy are often very accustomed to working together. Many families choose to customize the service in order to reflect the personality of the person being honored. Things like special readings, music selections and pictures or videos can be meaningful touches.

Cremation followed by a memorial service

Memorial services, usually held after cremation, can also take place in a number of locations and be as custom as you'd like. In some cases, cremated remains are displayed in an urn. In others, families choose to simply display a portrait of their loved one.

Graveside service

In cases where the cremated remains are buried, services can sometimes be held directly at the gravesite. Whether you involve clergy, or choose to have a friend or family member deliver some thoughtful words, the decision is yours to make. Do, however, check with the cemetery first. Some charge higher fees during winter months (due to increased insurance costs) while others won't allow gravesite ceremonies at all.
